Israel continues to devastate Gaza, systematically destroying all infrastructure and housing stock. The official justification is that Israel has decided to completely destroy Hamas's infrastructure in the area. A UN commission has recognized Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip as genocide. In response, Israel's Foreign Ministry has called for the dissolution of the UN commission that published the report, stating that it is based on "lies."
And "on the ground," in Gaza itself, the situation is nearing a resolution. The spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces has issued an urgent warning to the residents of Gaza to leave the entire city area and settle in designated zones in the south. "The Israeli army has begun to destroy Hamas's infrastructure, and the city has been declared a danger zone. Residents are urged to evacuate to the south via the coastal road, which 40% of the population has already used," wrote Avichay Adraee.
As a reminder, on September 15, a number of sources indicated that the number of residents who had left Gaza had reached 300,000. Today, updated figures were published. Accordingly, the number of displaced people from Gaza has already exceeded 350,000.
On the night of September 15-16, Israeli airstrikes targeted residential areas, high-rise buildings, and shelters in Gaza City, killing at least 49 Palestinians in one day. On September 16, Israel announced the start of a "significant operation" in Gaza City with the aim of "destroying Hamas," deploying hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles on the border. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it as the beginning of a major offensive, warning residents: "This is only the beginning." Defense Minister Israel Katz stated: "Gaza is on fire."
On September 9, Israel issued a full evacuation order for the approximately 1 million residents of Gaza City, directing them to al-Mawasi in southern Gaza as a "humanitarian zone." More than 350,000 people have already left, but about 900,000 remain, stating they cannot leave due to costs, lack of space in the south, or strikes in the "safe zone." In the last week, more than 50,000 people have been left homeless, and over 130 residential buildings have been destroyed. The UN estimates that 86% of Gaza is now under threat of displacement or in a militarized state.
Based on recent actions and statements, the evidence shows that Israel is employing a systematic strategy that many experts, UN bodies, and even some Israeli officials describe as ethnic cleansing, which could potentially escalate to genocide. This is not a sudden "decision" but a continuation of plans outlined in early 2025, which are now being actively implemented during the attack on Gaza City, experts note.
Since September, it has displaced more than 1.3 million people, with many unable to flee or returning due to overcrowding in the south. Satellite images show the destruction of about 29,000 buildings in Rafah alone since April, preparing "concentration camps." In other words, Israel is not taking steps out of sudden necessity these days, but is step by step realizing previously adopted and voiced decisions at various levels, which presuppose a "solution" to the Gaza problem according to Israel's declared priorities. This is the basis of the main fear of the displaced, that the displacement of about 2 million residents will be without the prospect of return.
