The Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway, which connects Turkey with the border of Nakhchivan, and the Zangezur corridor in general, will bring Turkey a profit of 147.6 billion lira ($3.6 billion at the current exchange rate) over 30 years, Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced in an interview with journalists. This is reported by Turkish media.
"The railway artery leading to the border with Azerbaijan will become an important link in the Zangezur corridor, which is especially important for the entire region," he emphasized.
According to the minister, the Middle Corridor will significantly shorten the delivery time of goods between Europe and Asia, which will make rail transport more in demand than sea transport. "The costs of building a 224-kilometer railway in Eastern Anatolia will be justified many times over," Uraloğlu added.
The head of the Turkish Ministry of Transport called the Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway a "strategic investment." "The Zangezur corridor is the shortest route to the Turkic states and the countries of Southeast and East Asia. About 15 million tons of cargo will be transported annually along this route," the minister noted.
The projected operating income over 30 years will be 135 billion lira, savings from accidents will be 3 billion, climate benefits will be 2.1 billion, time savings will be 3.5 billion, and savings on road maintenance will be 4 billion lira. In total, the income over 30 years will reach 147.6 billion lira.
