"Yerevantrans" to Be Liquidated, New Traffic Management Center to Be Created

The Yerevan Municipality is embarking on the next phase of modernizing the capital's transport system. At a session of the Yerevan Council of Elders, a decision was made to create the "Yerevan Traffic Management Center" community institution, which will deal with the complex issues of organizing and managing the city's traffic. Within the framework of this change, it is also planned to liquidate "Yerevantrans" CJSC, transferring part of its functions to the newly created structure.
The draft decision was presented to the members of the Council of Elders by the Deputy Mayor of Yerevan, Suren Grigoryan, who emphasized the urgent need to create such a center. According to him, the problems related to the capital's traffic require new systemic and technological solutions that will be concentrated in the hands of one specialized structure.
"It is proposed to create a corresponding unit in the form of a community institution, the Yerevan Traffic Management Center, whose functions should include the implementation of various measures and projects related to the organization and management of traffic," Grigoryan noted in his speech. The Deputy Mayor presented two main directions that the newly created center should implement by 2026.
Public transport dispatching system. This is a logical continuation of the comprehensive reforms of public transport. The new center will be responsible for the proper organization and control of transport flows and route schedules. This will allow for the effective operation of the route network, reduce waiting times, and increase the attractiveness of public transport for citizens.
"As you know, we are continuing to implement comprehensive reforms in the public transport sector. This should also be supplemented by the proper organization of flows and schedules," emphasized Suren Grigoryan.
General traffic management. This component includes the introduction of a system of "smart traffic lights" at the city's intersections, a comprehensive calculation of transport flows, and other technological solutions. The goal is to create a flexible and adaptive system that will respond to changing traffic in real time, reducing traffic jams and increasing road safety. "We have repeatedly spoken about the need for smart traffic lights, a comprehensive calculation of flows, and other measures... the need for such an institution has long been overdue," the Deputy Mayor added.
Parallel to the creation of the new center, the city authorities plan to liquidate "Yerevantrans" CJSC. Suren Grigoryan clarified that part of the above-mentioned functions are currently carried out by "Yerevantrans" itself. Therefore, to avoid duplication of functions and to make management more effective, the issue of liquidating the company will also be submitted to the Council of Elders for discussion. This step will allow for the concentration of all traffic management levers under one structure, ensuring the coordinated and effective development of the sector.
