The medals of the canceled championship: an exclusive souvenir

The Armenian Weightlifting Federation has received an exclusive souvenir. In 1983, the World Weightlifting Championship was supposed to be held in Yerevan. However, due to problems with the sports complex, it was moved to Moscow. The medals prepared for that exclusive event were not awarded and are now returning to the national federation ahead of the 2027 World Championship.

In two years, Yerevan will become the center of the weightlifting world, hosting the World Championship, which will be exclusive as it will serve as a qualification stage for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.

The medal for the World Championship was minted at the Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) Mint from stamped metal, in only 1000 copies. The author is the famous Armenian sculptor Hovsep Papikyan.
