Why Donald Trump Is Unlikely to Win the Nobel Peace Prize

9 OCT 2025 16:26
Few awards generate as much interest and debate as the Nobel Peace Prize. This year is no exception, especially as U.S. President Donald Trump has presented himself as the "planet's chief peacemaker," pointing to his involvement in several peace agreements and hinting that he deserves to be among the laureates.
But how well-founded are his claims? Nina Greger, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), whose organization studies the conditions necessary for peace, addressed this question in the pages of Time. According to her, despite Trump's self-confident statements, his chances of receiving the prize this Friday remain "extremely small." Greger insists the reason is not political bias. The Nobel Committee is an independent body, strictly bound by Alfred Nobel's will, which clearly states that the prize should be awarded to those who contribute to peace, disarmament, and international cooperation. Therefore, any candidate's activities are evaluated exclusively by these three main criteria.
And when judged by these criteria, according to the expert, the results of President Trump's activities present a "mixed and ambiguous picture." This means that although some recent important peace processes are associated with his name, his overall policy in the areas of international cooperation and disarmament may be assessed differently by the Nobel Committee. The contradictions in his activities and the inconsistency of certain steps with the ideals set by Nobel could play a decisive role in the committee's decision.
Thus, despite Donald Trump's efforts to present himself as a chief peacemaker and his clear desire to win the prestigious award, the head of a reputable peace research institute believes that the Nobel Committee's decision will most likely not meet the U.S. President's expectations. The final answer will be announced on Friday, but skepticism prevails in expert circles.
