UN Peacekeepers to Withdraw from Lebanon by End of 2026

29 AUG 2025 08:46
The UN Security Council has decided to gradually phase out the activities of the temporary peacekeeping force operating in southern Lebanon by December 31, 2026.
The decision was made under pressure from the United States and Israel. The mandate will be in effect for 16 months, including the withdrawal of forces and equipment.
The peacekeeping force was formed in 1978 to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli troops, and after 2006, their mandate was expanded to include a reconciliation mechanism between Israel and Hezbollah.
Lebanon is in favor of an extension, stressing that its army does not have sufficient resources. Israel has accused the peacekeepers of ignoring Hezbollah's military build-up in their area of responsibility. The US and its allies intend to transfer full control to the Lebanese army.
