On the night of November 6, Ukraine carried out a large-scale drone (UAV) attack on strategic targets deep inside the Russian Federation. The main targets were the Kostroma thermal power plant (TPP) and the Volgograd oil refinery. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported the downing of a total of 75 UAVs.
The governor of the Kostroma region, Sergey Sitnikov, confirmed that "energy infrastructure facilities" in the city of Volgorechensk were attacked. According to him, "in the morning, the city's residents heard the defense system at work; several explosions were heard," but there were no casualties or power outages. According to the Astra Telegram channel, the target was the Kostroma TPP, Russia's third most powerful thermal power plant, which produces about 1.5% of the country's total electricity. Local residents reported on social media that a fiery glow was seen over the plant after the strikes.
At the same time, a serious attack was carried out on Volgograd. Governor Andrey Bocharov reported that "a fire broke out in the territory of the industrial zone of the Krasnoarmeysky district as a result of falling debris." According to Astra, the reference is to the "Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka" oil refinery, which supplies fuel to the entire Southern Federal District of Russia and can process up to 15.7 million tons of oil per year. One UAV fell on a 24-story residential building, resulting in the death of one civilian.
According to the summary of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, during the night, air defense (AD) forces "shot down and destroyed" 75 Ukrainian UAVs. The largest number of them, 49, were shot down in the Volgograd region. UAVs were also destroyed over the Voronezh, Rostov, Belgorod, Oryol, Moscow, Kursk, Lipetsk, and Tambov regions, and the territory of Crimea.
