The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have officially announced their recognition of the State of Palestine. This joint step aims to revive the peace process based on the principle of two states, while clearly delineating the aspirations of the Palestinian people for sovereignty from the actions of the "Hamas" terrorist organization.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, making an official statement, emphasized the historical significance of this decision. "More than 75 years ago, we recognized the State of Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people. Today, we join more than 150 countries that also recognize the Palestinian state. This is a promise to the Palestinian and Israeli peoples that a better future is possible," Starmer noted. He stressed that this step is "not a reward for Hamas," as it implies that the organization "will have no future, no role in government, no role in ensuring security." London plans to expand sanctions against "Hamas" in the near future.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in turn, criticized the current government of Israel, noting that it "has methodically taken steps to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state." Carney called "Hamas" a structure that "terrorizes the people of Israel and oppresses the residents of Gaza, causing terrible suffering." The statement of the Canadian government says: "It is extremely important that Hamas releases all hostages, completely disarms, and has no role in the future governance of Palestine." The Prime Minister added that the Palestinian authorities have given a commitment to Canada and the international community to carry out reforms and hold general elections in 2026, in which "Hamas" will have no role. An agreement has also been reached on the demilitarization of the Palestinian state.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, in his statement published on the social platform X, noted that the international community has presented clear demands to the Palestinian Authority. According to him, the President of the Palestinian Authority has confirmed the right of Israel to exist and has undertaken direct obligations to Australia. These include holding democratic elections and implementing significant reforms in the fields of finance, governance, and education.
Thus, the coordinated decision of the three powers not only recognizes the right of the Palestinians to statehood, but also conditions it on democratic reforms, security guarantees for Israel, and the complete isolation of "Hamas" as a guarantee for building a peaceful future for the region. Experts are in no hurry to draw conclusions as to whether this joint step will have a decisive impact on the developments related to Palestine. At the moment, the reality is Israel's military operations in Gaza and the displacement of the population of the territory, contrary to the numerous exhortations and calls of the international community.
