At a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, US President Donald Trump made a series of statements concerning key issues of world politics: the Ukrainian conflict and relations with Russia. One of the main topics of the negotiations was Trump's decision to cancel the planned meeting with Russian President Putin, which was supposed to take place in Budapest.
Commenting on his own decision, Trump noted: "The impression was created that we would not achieve the desired goal." However, he left the door open for future negotiations, adding: "but we will meet in the future." Speaking about his vision for resolving the Ukrainian crisis, Trump made a clear proposal, calling on the parties to the conflict to immediately cease all military operations. In his opinion, the primary step should be to fix the current positions formed on the front. The US President also expressed his concern about Russia's intentions, suggesting that Moscow wants to establish control over "all of Ukraine." Trump stated that he would not allow such a scenario to develop.
During the meeting, the issue of arms supplies was also discussed. Trump clarified that the United States sells weapons to NATO allied countries, and not directly to Ukraine. He made a special assertion, noting that Kyiv uses exclusively European-made missiles to strike deep into Russian territory. Within this topic, Trump also spoke about American "Tomahawk" missiles, describing them as super-powerful and complex technology. "It is a very powerful weapon, a very accurate weapon, and, probably, that is why it is so complex. It takes a year of intensive training to learn how to use it. And we know how to use it, and we are not going to teach others," he emphasized, clarifying that the mastery of these technologies will remain exclusively under the jurisdiction of the American side.
Trump also expressed hope that the new sanctions imposed on Russia will not be long-lasting. In achieving peace, he also emphasized the role of China, noting that President Xi Jinping could have a significant impact on the peace process. A meeting with him remains on the agenda of the head of the White House.
