Trump Announces New Large-Scale Tariffs on Imports
26 SEP 2025 07:44
U.S. President Donald Trump, through his "Truth Social" platform, has published a series of statements signaling a sharp tightening of U.S. trade policy. Starting from October 1, the United States will impose significant tariffs on the import of a range of goods, including pharmaceuticals, trucks, and furniture. The main goal of these steps, as mentioned in the publications, is to protect American manufacturers and stimulate the relocation of production within the country.
The most radical change concerns the pharmaceutical industry. Trump announced that the import of any branded or patented pharmaceutical product will be taxed with a 100 percent tariff. This effectively doubles the cost of imported drugs, making them uncompetitive in the American market. The tariff will not apply to companies that build their pharmaceutical plants within the United States. Trump even detailed what "build" means: it is defined as "the start of construction" and/or "being under construction." "Therefore, no tariff will be imposed on these pharmaceutical products if construction has already begun," he added. This move is essentially an ultimatum to global pharmaceutical giants: either move production to the U.S. or lose the American market.
In addition to pharmaceuticals, Trump's statements also targeted industrial and household goods. Also from October 1, a 25 percent tariff will be imposed on all types of imported trucks. He directly justified this decision by the need to protect American companies and manufacturers.
Simultaneously, tariffs on imported furniture will be significantly increased. A 50 percent duty is planned for all kitchen cabinets, bathroom furniture, and related products. In addition, a 30 percent tariff will be applied to the import of upholstered furniture.
