Third Quake Hits Afghanistan as Death Toll Tops 2,200

A third earthquake in five days has occurred in southeastern Afghanistan with a magnitude of 6.2. The epicenter of the new earthquake was located on the border with Pakistan, at a depth of 10 km.

The death toll from the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred late on the evening of August 31 in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces has exceeded 2,200. More than 3,600 people were injured, and tens of thousands were left homeless. In some settlements, 98% of the houses were destroyed. In total, about 84,000 people were affected by the earthquake.

Search operations are still ongoing. During these operations, on September 2, the second earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 5.5, making the search efforts more difficult.
