The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative has awarded the 2025 Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity to Sudanese doctor Jamal Eltayeb for his exceptional courage and dedication in providing medical assistance to people in a conflict zone. The laureate's name was announced at a solemn ceremony on Ellis Island in New York, which also marked the tenth anniversary of Aurora's activities.
In the context of the ongoing civil war in Sudan and the almost complete collapse of the healthcare system, Dr. Eltayeb continues to operate the Al Nao Hospital in Omdurman, which remains one of the last functioning medical facilities in the greater Khartoum area. Since April 2023, he has been forced to work under constant shelling, the collapse of infrastructure, and a severe shortage of medical supplies, including anesthetics, saving the lives of hundreds of wounded and sick people.
"In a period when indifference is widespread and compassion is at risk, Dr. Eltayeb is living proof that humanity has not disappeared," noted Noubar Afeyan, co-founder of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative.
Dr. Eltayeb was selected from more than 800 candidates. As a laureate, he will receive a $1 million award, which will enable him to expand his activities and support other local organizations. "The Aurora Prize inspires doctors, teachers, humanitarians, and ordinary people everywhere to continue their work, knowing that their efforts are important. This is a reminder that the courage of one person can bring about change, and compassion can bring healing," said Dr. Eltayeb.
The Chair of the Aurora Prize Selection Committee, Lord Ara Darzi, emphasized: "Despite the incredible danger and deprivation, Dr. Eltayeb has shown by his example what true humanitarian leadership is. His selfless work reminds us that even in times of war, humanity can prevail."
