Serbian Police Clash with Protesters Demanding Elections
6 SEP 2025 08:11
Serbian police used stun grenades and tear gas on the campus of the University of Novi Sad to disperse protesters demanding early elections. Reuters writes about this. The protesters' goal is to overthrow President Aleksandar Vučić and his ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
In a late-night speech, Vučić announced that 11 police officers had been injured. There is no information on how many protesters were injured. Protesters clashed with police in front of the Faculty of Philosophy and threw burning objects at them, and the police, in turn, used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the protesters.
"We will not allow the destruction of state institutions," Vučić told reporters, adding, "Serbia is a strong and responsible state." He accused foreign security services of being behind the anti-government protesters in Serbia and announced that his supporters would hold rallies in Serbian cities on Sunday.
Let us recall that protests in Serbia erupted last November after the collapse of the renovated roof of the Novi Sad railway station, which killed 16 people. The protests were mostly peaceful until August 13, when dozens of police and civilians were injured in clashes.
Protesters blame the authorities for the Novi Sad railway station disaster and are demanding early elections, hoping to overthrow Vučić and his party.
