Church of England Appoints First Female Leader in History
3 OCT 2025 11:35
The Church of England is entering a new, historic era. For the first time in its nearly 500-year history, a woman has been appointed to the position of the church's spiritual leader. Sarah Mullally, the current Bishop of London, has been chosen as the Archbishop of Canterbury, assuming the role of spiritual leader not only for England but for the worldwide Anglican Communion. This decision, confirmed by King Charles, is considered a breakthrough step for gender equality in one of the world's oldest and most influential Christian institutions.
Sarah Mullally's appointment is exceptional not only because of her gender but also due to her past career path. Before dedicating herself to spiritual service, she had a brilliant career in the healthcare sector, holding the position of Chief Nursing Officer for England, the country's highest post in the nursing field. It was only in 2001 that she was ordained as a priest, beginning her ascent in the church hierarchy. In 2018, she already made history by becoming the first female Bishop of London. Her leadership skills were particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when she was able to unite the community and effectively manage the crisis.
Mullally takes the helm of the church at a difficult time. The Church of England faces a number of serious challenges: a decline in the number of followers, financial difficulties, and, most importantly, deep internal divisions over social issues, particularly the blessing of same-sex marriages. This issue has divided the church, creating tension between the conservative and liberal wings.
In her first speech as the newly elected archbishop, Mullally emphasized the importance of unity and reconciliation. Acknowledging the existence of "deep disagreements," she stated that her goal is to be a "church for all of England" and to build bridges between people with different views. She replaces Justin Welby, who had been in office since 2013.
