Conflicting Forecasts on Russia-Ukraine Conflict End

16 NOV 2025 09:28
Against the backdrop of ongoing military operations in Ukraine, deep disagreements are emerging in Europe regarding the prospects for resolving the conflict. Recent statements by two European leaders - Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán - demonstrate two conflicting visions for resolving the problem.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb calls on Europe to remain calm and be prepared for a long confrontation. In his opinion, the Russian-Ukrainian war is unlikely to end peacefully in the near future. "A ceasefire in Ukraine is unlikely to be established before spring," Stubb noted, emphasizing that European allies should continue their support despite the corruption scandal that arose in Kyiv.
Stubb warns that the winter months will be a serious test of resilience and determination, as "Russia continues its hybrid attacks and information warfare across the continent." The Finnish leader's words emphasize the need for a realistic approach and resilience in the face of ongoing aggression.
In contrast to Stubb's cautious stance, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declares that the conflict will soon end. "I think we are very close to achieving peace," he said, assuring that NATO countries should not see a threat of attack from Russia. Orbán believes that President Putin is interested in establishing peace, and Moscow would like to end military operations faster.
According to him, a "unified position of the West" is required to stop the conflict. In this context, he highlights the efforts of US President Donald Trump, which, in his estimation, are aimed at achieving peace, while European Union leaders, according to Orbán, "are urging Ukraine to continue military operations to achieve more favorable conditions on the battlefield."
The Hungarian Prime Minister also predicts that after a possible Russian takeover of Donbas, "there will be no more sense in continuing the war."
