Russia Pounds Ukraine in Massive Attack, Killing Six Civilians

On the night of October 21-22, Russia carried out a large-scale combined attack on Ukraine using missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), targeting the capital, Kyiv, and a number of other cities. According to Ukrainian officials, at least six people were killed as a result of the brutal night attack, including two children, and dozens of people received bodily injuries of varying degrees.
The attack caused significant damage to civilian and energy infrastructure, leading to power outages in most of the country. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that debris from downed missiles and UAVs fell in several districts of the capital, causing fires and damaging residential buildings and other structures.
In particular, in the Dniprovskyi district, falling debris caused a fire to break out on the upper floors of a multi-story residential building, from which rescuers evacuated dozens of residents. Similar incidents were also recorded in the Desnyanskyi and Darnytskyi districts, where apartment buildings were damaged, and rescue services had difficulty extinguishing the fire.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched more than 400 unmanned aerial vehicles and 28 missiles overnight. Ukrainian air defense forces managed to shoot down 333 UAVs and 16 missiles. The main target of the attacks was Ukraine's energy system. According to Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk, this is part of a methodical campaign to destroy Ukraine's energy sector ahead of winter.
The country's largest private energy company, DTEK, reported emergency power outages in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions and "significant damage" to infrastructure in the Odesa region. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating: "Another night that proves Russia does not feel enough pressure to prolong the war." He noted that strikes were also carried out in the direction of Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Chernihiv, Poltava, and other regions.
