Since the beginning of 2025, Russian forces have captured territory from Ukraine comparable to the size of Luxembourg. According to estimates by Ukrainian and Russian military bloggers, the Russian army has captured 2395 km² of Ukrainian territory since the beginning of the year. This is almost equivalent to the area of Luxembourg (2586 km²). For comparison, in 2024, Russian troops captured 3388 km². This means their advance is accelerating. If this trend continues, Ukraine could lose more than 4000 km² by the end of the year.
As Bild writes, in June alone, the Armed Forces of Ukraine abandoned two dozen settlements. Due to a shortage of troops, the Ukrainian command allocates 5-10 soldiers for the defense of small settlements, while Russian detachments, which attack with 20-50 soldiers, even after losing half of the attackers—killed or wounded—achieve their goal with the remainder and capture the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
