The phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on October 16 was initiated by Moscow. This was reported by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. During the phone conversation, the leaders agreed to hold a personal meeting in Budapest in the near future.
According to Peskov, the meeting could take place within two weeks or "a little later." "This is a general understanding that nothing should be prolonged," he emphasized.
Referring to the topic of the presidents' discussions, Peskov noted that the question of reducing the threat of supplying "Tomahawk" missiles to Kyiv should be addressed to the American side. "The US should be asked whether the Putin-Trump conversation has reduced the threat of supplying 'Tomahawks' to Kyiv," the Kremlin spokesman stated, indirectly confirming that the topic was on the negotiation agenda.
It is noteworthy that not long after the phone conversation with Trump, Putin also had a phone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. This is reported by the Kremlin. According to analysts, this testifies to the active preparation for the summit to be held in Budapest. Hungary will also actively participate in it, improving its own weight in the European family with its mediation mission. Hungary, as a member of NATO and the EU, occupies a unique position in protecting its interests, which earns the respect of Putin and Trump, Peskov said. "Putin's flight route to Hungary for the meeting with Trump is, of course, still uncertain," noted the Russian President's press secretary.
