During his working visit to New York, the President of the Republic Vahagn Khachaturyan met with the President of the Republic of Iraq, Abd al-Latif Jamal Rashid. During the meeting, a number of issues related to the agenda of Armenia-Iraq bilateral relations were discussed. Both sides emphasized the need to deepen the dynamic development of Armenian-Iraqi relations and the political dialogue and practical cooperation built on the basis of mutual interest.
The parties highlighted the importance of expanding bilateral economic interaction, especially in the spheres of trade, investment, and other areas of mutual interest. In this context, the necessity of introducing direct Yerevan-Baghdad flights was emphasized as an important tool for promoting political, economic, and tourist ties. The interlocutors mutually praised the recent Armenian-Iraqi business forum and stressed the importance of continuously promoting such initiatives.
The meeting also addressed regional developments and the general situation. In particular, special emphasis was placed on the work being done towards establishing a lasting and stable peace in the conditions created after the initialing of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 8 of this year, and in this context, the importance of realizing the prospects of the "Crossroads of Peace" project and the existing potential for mutual regional benefit.
During the conversation, the presidents also emphasized the development of further cooperation between the two countries in the field of education, in connection with which President Vahagn Khachaturyan noted that the opening of a branch of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne in Gyumri, Armenia, could also be a good opportunity for Iraqi students, which would stimulate the activation of student exchange programs.
