Politico: US to Play "Minimal Role" in Ukraine's Security

"We are back to where we were in the spring," the Pentagon has announced, stating that the US will play a minimal role in ensuring Ukraine's security, reports Politico. A senior Pentagon official for policy told a small group of allies that the US intends to have a minimal role in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.

This is one of the clearest signs that Europe will be forced to shoulder the burden of maintaining a lasting peace. These comments, made by Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, came in response to questions from European military leaders.

According to a European official and another person briefed on the talks, the heads of the defense ministries of Great Britain, France, Germany, and Finland urged the American side to disclose what troops and aviation assets it would provide to Ukraine to maintain the peace agreement with Russia.

"In the end, we are back to where we were in the spring: with a coalition of the willing," said one of the European officials.
