Peru's New President Declares State of Emergency in Lima

Peru's newly appointed President, José Jerí, on Tuesday declared a 30-day state of emergency in the capital, Lima, and the adjacent province of Callao. According to an official statement, the move is aimed at combating a rising wave of crime, reports CNN.
This decision was preceded by large-scale protests last week, during which one person was killed and more than 100 were injured in clashes. President Jerí specified that the state of emergency, which will come into effect at midnight and requires the approval of the Council of Ministers, will allow the armed forces to be involved with the police to control public order.
In his televised address, the president made a resolute statement. "We are moving from defense to offense in the fight against crime, a fight that will allow us to restore peace, tranquility, and the confidence of millions of Peruvians," he said.
José Jerí took office earlier this month after the ousting of former President Dina Boluarte. Presenting his new government, he promised that the fight against crime would be his top priority. However, his administration began with a serious challenge: he faced his first major protest, organized by civil society groups and the so-called "Generation Z" youth, who demanded concrete action to prevent the rise in crime.
It should be noted that declaring a state of emergency for security reasons is not new for Peru. Former President Boluarte also imposed a similar 30-day regime in March. However, as analysts and security experts note, these measures, which have been used many times in the past, have had little practical effect in reducing crime levels.
