The Congress of Peru has impeached President Dina Boluarte. This comes with only half a year left until the elections. The deputies declared the head of state's "moral incapacity" and stated that Boluarte is unable to govern the country. The deputies also accused her of violating ethical norms and being mired in corruption.
Meanwhile, in the city of Juliaca in Peru's southern Puno region, protesters threw eggs, stones, and other objects at presidential candidate Phillip Butters, forcing the police to evacuate him from a local radio station. Relatives of those who died during the 2022-2023 riots joined the protest, condemning Butters' previous statements calling for the police to use lethal force, and demanding a public apology.
During the protests that took place in Peru from December 2022 to February 2023, 50 people were killed by the police and military, and hundreds were seriously injured. The relatives of the victims are demanding truth, justice, and compensation.
