According to The Dawn newspaper, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has described the powerful torrential rains in the country as "Judgment Day." He made this statement on August 21, during a meeting with those affected by floods and landslides in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
"In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone, more than 350 of our brothers and sisters have died, and the death toll across the country has exceeded 700. This is a kind of Judgment Day," the prime minister emphasized. He recalled the devastating floods of 2022 and stressed that no lessons were learned from that tragedy.
At that time, the floods damaged one-third of Pakistan's territory, about 2,000 people died, and the material damage amounted to 30 billion dollars.
Sharif condemned the construction of houses on riverbanks and in flood-prone areas, calling it a human error that has exacerbated the disaster. He pointed to deforestation as the next problem.
The monsoon rain season in Pakistan usually lasts from June to September. During this period, heavy rains often lead to floods and other natural disasters. According to forecasts, the heavy rains in Pakistan will continue until mid-September.
