Orbán: Trump-Putin Meeting in Budapest in Two Weeks
17 OCT 2025 07:11
The potential meeting between the presidents of Russia and the US could take place within the next two weeks. This was announced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, noting that an organizing committee has already been established in Budapest to prepare for the visits of the two leaders.
Detailing the timeline, Orbán noted: "Rubio and Lavrov will try to resolve the remaining issues within a week, and then, a week later, they will be able to come here to Budapest."
This announcement follows active diplomatic efforts by Hungary's foreign policy department. On October 16, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó had telephone conversations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau to discuss the preparatory work for this very summit.
The prospect of such a high-level meeting has given rise to wide discussions in the international community. The prestigious British publication The Telegraph, commenting on the possible developments, writes that "a meeting between Putin and Trump would be a painful blow for the EU and would strengthen Orbán's influence within the community."
According to analysts, holding such a summit in Budapest could be perceived as a diplomatic victory for Viktor Orbán, which would position him as an important mediator in the dialogue between the West and Russia, thereby changing the balance of power within the European Union.
