Ombudsman Condemns Attack on Journalist Karapetyan

As a result of monitoring by the Human Rights Defender's (HRD) staff, worrying information has been received that journalist Hakob Karapetyan, a representative of the Yerevan Press Club, was subjected to violence days ago.

Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan has repeatedly emphasized that any manifestation of violence is strictly unacceptable and condemnable. Every case must receive a proper legal assessment, and the perpetrators must be held accountable.

The state has clear legal obligations in this regard. The unimpeded activity of persons carrying out professional activities, including journalistic ones, in accordance with ethical standards, and its guarantee are particularly important.

As a result of a study conducted by the HRD staff, it was revealed that criminal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the mentioned case and a preliminary investigation is underway.

Emphasizing the mentioned circumstance, the Human Rights Defender considers it crucial to conduct a prompt, objective, and comprehensive investigation into such cases and to provide the public with an acceptable amount of information in this regard.

It should be noted that all such cases are under the direct attention of the Human Rights Defender, and necessary steps are being taken within the scope of the Defender's competence.
