NATO "Ghost Ships" Appear in the Baltic Sea
7 NOV 2025 11:19
An unusual and worrying phenomenon was recorded in the Baltic Sea earlier this week: ship positioning systems detected signals from several NATO member country warships which, however, should have actually been in completely different parts of the world. This is reported by the prestigious Finnish publication Helsingin Sanomat, citing data from the ship tracking platforms Marinetraffic and VesselFinder.
Specifically, the issue concerns warships registered in Spain, Great Britain, and Canada. According to Marinetraffic data, some of these ships were still in the Mediterranean Sea on October 30. However, for unknown reasons, their positioning systems now show that they have appeared in the Baltic Sea basin.
Even more strange is the case of one of the Spanish warships. As Helsingin Sanomat notes, the ship left the Somali capital, Mogadishu, at the beginning of September and headed for Japan, where it was supposed to arrive at the end of November. Despite this route, the ship's current location on the maps is indicated in the Gulf of Finland, which is physically impossible.
This incomprehensible situation is not limited to military ships. According to the data from the same services, signals from cargo ships that should actually be in the Black Sea are also being detected in the Baltic Sea.
This phenomenon is causing serious concern among military and security experts. Although there are no official comments yet, such discrepancies could indicate deliberate jamming of global positioning systems (GPS) or the use of elements of electronic warfare. The appearance of so-called "ghost ships" in this zone of geopolitical tension could be aimed at causing confusion, testing NATO's response systems, or concealing the real movement of other ships.
