NATO Considers Arming Drones to Counter Russia
9 OCT 2025 07:46
NATO allies are discussing the possibility of a more decisive response to the provocative actions of the Russian Federation. According to the Financial Times, the goal of these discussions is to raise the price for Russia of its "hybrid war" and to develop clear response measures in case of numerous airspace violations by Russian unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft.
Among the proposed options is the arming of reconnaissance drones that collect information about Russian military activities. Also under discussion is the simplification of the rules of engagement for NATO pilots on the Alliance's eastern border, so that they can shoot down Russian aircraft and drones that violate the border.
Another possible step being considered is conducting NATO military exercises directly on the border with Russia, especially in more remote and less protected sections of the border. This move would be seen as a show of force and a deterrent.
However, there is not yet a unified opinion on this issue within the alliance. According to one official, some countries insist that NATO should adopt a more aggressive stance as an effective means of deterrence. They believe that only decisive actions can force the Kremlin to back down from its provocative policy.
At the same time, other allies advise adhering to a more conservative response, taking into account the risks of a direct confrontation with Russia as a nuclear power. They are concerned that an overly harsh response could lead to unpredictable consequences and a large-scale conflict. The Alliance, in fact, faces a difficult choice: finding a balance between decisive deterrence and avoiding a dangerous escalation.
