Mirzoyan Details Priorities: Peace Deal, Unblocking, and EU Relations

The promotion of the peace process with Azerbaijan, the unblocking of regional infrastructures, and the deepening of relations with the European Union hold a key place in Armenia's foreign policy agenda. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the RA, Ararat Mirzoyan, presented details on these directions during the discussion of the 2026 state budget draft in the National Assembly.
The Minister described the establishment of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan as a "watershed event." He recalled that on August 8 in Washington, witnessed by the US President, a declaration was signed and a peace agreement was initialed by the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan. "I can, without hesitation, call what happened on August 8 a turning point, without underestimating the work done in this direction before that. What happened that day in Washington was a turning point and a cornerstone for further work," Mirzoyan emphasized.
He specifically addressed the speculations surrounding the treaty, stressing that the public disclosure of the document showed them to be unfounded. "We will all remember what manipulations were spread about this treaty: constitutional changes, mass deportations, and so on. Thank God, the paper is public, and we see that not only are none of those manipulations there, but there is not even a distant hint of them," the minister noted. The document, according to him, enshrines the principles of non-interference in each other's internal affairs, the inviolability of borders, and cooperation.
An important component of the peace treaty is the unblocking of regional communications. Mirzoyan recalled that Armenia has been under blockade for 30+ years, and now the parties are agreeing to unblock and, if necessary, build new infrastructure, including the Yeraskh-Sadarak section. He clarified: "What will be unblocked, including the section of the Azerbaijan-Nakhichevan communication located in our territory, will operate fully under the jurisdiction of the RA." The main partner of the RA in this matter will be the USA, with which active work continues.
At the same time, Armenia is deepening its relations with the European Union. "The Armenia-European Union cooperation has quite significant components. New documents are also planned to be signed," Mirzoyan said, without, however, specifying what specific documents are in question.
