55 MEPs Demand Immediate EU Accession Talks for Moldova

55 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), representing 19 countries and the main democratic political forces, have united to demand the immediate start of negotiations for the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union. In a joint letter addressed to the President of the European Council, António Costa, they emphasized Europe's unity and solidarity with Moldova at this crucial moment for the entire region. The letter's authors, Victor Negrescu (Romania), Katarina Barley (Germany), and Pina Picierno (Italy), argue that the recent parliamentary elections in Moldova were a turning point. The convincing victory of pro-European forces, expressed through the active participation of citizens both within the country and in the diaspora, is a powerful confirmation that the country is committed to common European values: democracy, the rule of law, transparency, and solidarity.
"The free and fair elections leave no doubt that the people of Moldova have reaffirmed their clear desire to integrate into the European Union," the letter states. The MEPs stress that this choice by the Moldovan people, made despite external pressures and disinformation campaigns, testifies to their democratic resilience and determination.
For many years, the European Parliament has supported Moldova's European path, mobilizing financial assistance and directing EU funds towards priority areas such as education, social support, and energy security. Now, according to the MEPs, is the time to act. They call on the President of the European Council to immediately put the issue of starting accession negotiations on the agenda.
This decision is seen not only as a logical next step but also as a strategic investment in regional stability, security, and prosperity. "The Republic of Moldova has done its part. The European Union must respond with equal determination, showing that Europe is not just an aspiration, but a concrete project that brings real benefits to its citizens," the MEPs conclude, emphasizing that it is now the EU's turn to demonstrate its support for the democratic and European aspirations of the Moldovan people.
