Madagascar's President in Hiding Amid Protests

14 OCT 2025 10:30
Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina is in hiding due to a threat to his life. He took this step after weeks of anti-government protests. These were initially caused by shortages of water and electricity, as well as corruption. Later, a political component was added to the social and economic demands.
The protesters, the majority of whom are young people, are demanding the president's resignation. The situation has further escalated after part of the army defected to the protesters' side.
Rajoelina has stated that he is ready for dialogue and continues to govern the state from an unknown location, which is presumably abroad. At the same time, the opposition insists on impeachment. The success of this endeavor, however, depends on the votes of the deputies from the president's own party.
