Latvian MFA Distances Itself from Ambassador's "Zangezur Corridor" Remarks

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia has provided an official clarification regarding the interview of its ambassador to Azerbaijan, Edgars Skuja, in which the diplomat used the term "Zangezur corridor," causing a wide response. In response to a query from the publication "Chronicles of the Caucasus," the Latvian Foreign Ministry has clearly distanced itself from the ambassador's expression, emphasizing that it does not reflect the country's official position.
In an interview with the Azerbaijani news agency Report.az on October 21, Ambassador Skuja spoke about the so-called "Zangezur corridor." This raised questions, as the Armenian authorities categorically reject such logic, and the term is absent from official international documents, including the Washington agreements.
In response to the query, the Latvian Foreign Ministry emphasized its commitment to international agreements and the positions of partner countries. "In official statements and when expressing its position, Latvia uses internationally recognized terminology," the ministry's comment reads.
The MFA clarified that any official reference to regional transport links is based on the definitions enshrined in the Washington Agreement signed on August 8, 2025, known as the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity" (TRIPP). The ministry stressed that "this terminology reflects the common understanding of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and international partners."
As for the ambassador's words, the MFA described them as a personal opinion.
In conclusion, Latvia reaffirmed its support for transport and trade links that promote regional cooperation in the South Caucasus, provided that they "respect sovereignty and territorial integrity without interfering with the sovereignty of the parties."
