A major landslide caused by torrential rains on the Indonesian island of Central Java has killed six people, with another 17 considered missing. This is reported by the Indonesian state news agency Antara.
The disaster occurred on November 13 in the village of Sibeuniing in the city of Cilacap, destroying dozens of residential houses. A representative of the disaster management service, quoted by "Antara," said that search and rescue operations are ongoing. "We have found three more bodies, 17 are left to be found," he said.
The work for the rescuers is complicated by the difficult terrain, as the victims are under a 3 to 8-meter layer of soil.
The rainy season in this Southeast Asian country, which began in September and will last until April, significantly increases the risk of floods and landslides. This is not the first major disaster to occur in Central Java this year. In January, a landslide caused by heavy rains in another city in the province, Pekalongan, claimed the lives of at least 25 people.
