Kyrgyzstan's Parliament Dissolves Itself, Sets Snap Polls

25 SEP 2025 07:52
Kyrgyzstan's parliament, the Jogorku Kenesh, made a historic decision on September 25 to dissolve itself. The initiative was unanimously supported by all 84 deputies present. Snap parliamentary elections have been scheduled for November 30 of this year.
The main reason for the self-dissolution initiative is the desire to avoid political tension expected in 2026. As explained by deputy Ulan Primov, parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan were scheduled for November 2026, followed by presidential elections a month later. According to him, holding the Jogorku Kenesh elections earlier is the right decision to avoid political turbulence. In addition, Primov recalled that a new law on parliamentary elections was recently adopted, which will create 30 multi-mandate constituencies, with 3 deputies to be elected in each.
Before the decision to dissolve, the Jogorku Kenesh worked at an unprecedented speed, discussing 35 agenda items in just 2 hours. The speaker had asked the deputies to save time and vote on bills in the third reading without discussion.
The speaker of the self-dissolved parliament, Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu, stated that the current convocation will continue to perform its duties until the first session of the new deputy corps, emphasizing that he will only convene the deputies in case of emergencies. After the session, the deputies left the hall in high spirits.
The head of the Central Election Commission of Kyrgyzstan, Tynchtinbek Shaynazarov, confirmed that the elections will be held on November 30. Within the next five days, the president will sign the decree on snap elections, after which the CEC will define the boundaries of the constituencies, and the nomination of candidates will begin. The election campaign will start on November 10.
