Colombian authorities announced on Friday that they have arrested the alleged leader of the Italian 'Ndrangheta mafia in Latin America. He is accused of controlling cocaine shipments and creating trafficking routes in Europe, reports the Associated Press.
Police identified the suspect as Giuseppe Palermo, also known as "Pepe," an Italian wanted on an Interpol "red notice."
Colombian police chief Carlos Fernando Triana stated that the detainee is considered a member of one of the 'Ndrangheta mafia's subsidiary structures.
The 'Ndrangheta, one of Italy's most influential and secretive criminal organizations, has expanded its influence abroad. It is considered one of the main organizations importing cocaine into Europe.
