The groundbreaking ceremony for the Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway line took place in Turkey. Turkey's Minister of Infrastructure, Uraloğlu, made a speech at the event. He stated that the new railway line has strategic importance as a part of the so-called "Zangezur Corridor."
It will provide a direct railway connection between Turkey and Azerbaijan via Nakhichevan, becoming a crucial element of the Middle Corridor from East to West, from China to Europe, the minister noted.
According to Turkish sources, the new 224 km long electrified double-track line will be able to transport up to 15 million tons of cargo and 5.5 million passengers annually.
The project, worth 2.4 billion euros, is financed with the support of the Turkish Ministry of Finance and includes large-scale infrastructure: dozens of tunnels, bridges, and crossings. It is planned that the railway will be ready within 4-5 years, Turkish sources report.
