India Cuts Russian Oil Imports by 50% After US Talks

Following "productive trade negotiations" between the United States and India, Indian oil refineries are already reducing imports of Russian oil by 50%. This was announced by a White House official, noting a new phase in economic relations between the two countries.
This significant reduction in the import of Russian energy carriers is a result of direct pressure exerted by Washington, wrote Reuters. Previously, the US had doubled tariffs on Indian goods, demanding that New Delhi stop financing Russia through the purchase of energy carriers. American negotiators made it clear that reducing the import of Russian oil is a key precondition for lowering tariffs and concluding a large-scale trade agreement between the two countries. In fact, Washington presented New Delhi with a choice: either continue buying cheap oil from Russia and face serious obstacles in the American market, or limit cooperation with Moscow in exchange for economic privileges from the US.
The White House statement indicates that India has most likely chosen the second option, preferring to strengthen relations with its strategic partner, the US. This step could have a significant impact not only on Russian-Indian economic ties but also on the global energy market, as India was one of the largest buyers of Russian oil.
It is noteworthy that, as of now, the Indian government has not officially informed the oil refineries about the request to reduce the import of Russian oil. This may indicate that the process is still ongoing, or that New Delhi prefers to act gradually and without official announcements on this sensitive issue to avoid a sharp escalation of relations with Moscow. Nevertheless, the White House statement is already a clear signal that a political decision has been made, and India is revising its energy policy in favor of deepening cooperation with Western partners.
