Hamas Kills 33 in Bid to Retake Control of Gaza

After the ceasefire agreement with Israel came into force, the significantly weakened Hamas group is trying to restore its influence and control in the Gaza Strip by resorting to violence and killings. According to Reuters, at least 33 people have already been killed as a result of clashes with rival groups, which raises serious concerns about the future of the fragile peace established in the region.
Hamas, which was seriously damaged militarily and structurally as a result of the two-year war with Israel, is now taking advantage of the opportunity provided by the ceasefire to strengthen its positions. The group's militants are gradually returning to the streets. They are acting cautiously, trying not to violate the terms of the ceasefire, which concern the confrontation with Israel, but at the same time, they are acting harshly and mercilessly against internal rivals. This wave of killings aims to eliminate alternative centers of power and show the population that despite the losses suffered, Hamas continues to be the main force in Gaza.
This situation is in direct contradiction with the main provisions of the peace plan reached through the mediation of US President Donald Trump. The plan clearly envisages the removal of Hamas from power and the creation of new security mechanisms in the Gaza Strip. In particular, it is planned to deploy an international mission that should deal with the training and preparation of the local police.
However, paradoxically, during the transitional phase, Hamas received temporary permission to carry out patrol services in some parts of Gaza. The group is now abusing this right, using it not to maintain public order, but to get rid of political opponents.
Experts note that Hamas's actions have a dual purpose. First of all, they are aimed at strengthening power and destroying rivals. Second, and this is no less important, Hamas is thus showing that its security services intend to play a key role in the future governance system of the Strip. This is a direct challenge to the international community and the peace plan, which provides for the demilitarization of Gaza and the nullification of Hamas's role.
