Gyumri Day Cancelled, Ruling Party Seeks Reversal

The issue of the "Gyumri Day" celebration was supposed to be discussed during the session held on September 16. The agenda also included the issue of organizing and holding the celebration. An allocation of 6 million drams was planned for the event. Before the vote, Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan made a proposal, suggesting to remove the issue from the agenda.
"The mood isn't right, and it's cold outside," was how the Gyumri Mayor justified it. The initiative to cancel the celebration was also supported by Ruben Mkhitaryan, the head of the "My Powerful Community" faction. Without a vote, the issue was removed from the agenda, and the "Gyumri Day" celebration was officially cancelled.
However, the topic still remains on the agenda. The "Civil Contract" faction has come up with an initiative aimed at reinstating the event dedicated to "Gyumri Day." Sarik Minasyan, the head of the faction, wrote about this on his Facebook page, noting that the people of Gyumri cannot be deprived of the holiday and the opportunity to properly celebrate a day that has already become a tradition.
The issue of holding the "Gyumri Day" celebration will be on the agenda of an extraordinary session. It is another question how the "Civil Contract" faction, which does not form a majority but has the most votes individually, is going to succeed in discussions with a seemingly predetermined outcome.
