Germany's F126 Frigate Program Faces Delays, Cost Hikes

Germany has embarked on its most ambitious naval modernization project since the Second World War. The government has approved the construction of six F126-type frigates, considered the country's largest shipbuilding project since 1945. However, this strategically important program is facing serious challenges: technical problems, schedule delays, and a significant increase in costs.
According to the publication BILD, citing its sources, the total value of the order exceeds 10 billion euros. Despite the huge financial investment, the project is significantly behind schedule. The first frigate was supposed to be delivered to the German Navy in 2028, but it has now become clear that this deadline will not be met. At the core of the problems are technical difficulties, particularly with IT systems, that emerged in the initial phase of the project.
Initially, the contract was signed with the Dutch shipyard Damen Naval, but the project reached a stalemate. There was even concern within the government that the program might be canceled altogether. However, a decision has now been made to transfer construction to the German company Lürssen (NVL), which has expressed its willingness to take on the role of the main contractor.
The strategic concept of the project has also changed during its implementation. The F126 frigates were originally designed as universal long-range vessels. However, in the context of Russia's aggressive policy, as noted by military experts, priorities have shifted. Germany now needs powerful warships, especially for operations in the Baltic Sea. "In the Baltic Sea, we need combat-ready ships that will be able to deter Russian forces," one of the sources told BILD.
