First Train with Russian Wheat Reaches Armenia via Azerbaijan

6 NOV 2025 05:59
The first train of 15 wagons loaded with Russian wheat arrived in Armenia on November 6, passing through the territories of Azerbaijan and Georgia. Yerevan views this step as a crucial component of the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan and a practical step towards strengthening mutual trust.
According to a statement released by the office of the Prime Minister of Armenia, "The lifting of restrictions on cargo transportation to Armenia by Azerbaijan is an important step towards the restoration of regional communications and the promotion of economic cooperation." The government also emphasizes that this initiative is one of the practical implementations of the agreements reached in Washington, which contributes to the institutionalization of the peace established between the two countries.
The Russian Ministry of Transport has reported that by the end of January 2026, a total of 132 wagons of wheat are planned to be delivered to Armenia through the territories of Azerbaijan and Georgia. The ministry also noted that in addition to wheat, the possibilities of supplying other types of cargo are being actively discussed, paving the way for broader economic cooperation.
In connection with this development, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk expressed his gratitude to his counterparts, Deputy Prime-ministers Mher Grigoryan of Armenia and Shahin Mustafayev of Azerbaijan, for their joint work on unblocking transport links in the South Caucasus. He also extended special thanks to Georgia for its constructive approach to organizing transit.
"It is symbolic that the first cargo to travel this route was Russian grain, one of the most important symbols of living and creating, which once again emphasizes the common aspiration for peace in the South Caucasus and the transition from confrontation to cooperation," Overchuk said in his speech.
