Finland Proposes Trump-Putin Meeting
3 NOV 2025 16:02
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has launched a high-level diplomatic initiative, proposing to organize negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump at the end of November. This proposal, made against a backdrop of geopolitical tension, is seen as an attempt to resume dialogue between the superpowers. This was reported by the Finnish portal Yle.
President Stubb presented his proposal at the opening of the National Defence Courses. He suggested the G20 summit, scheduled to be held in Johannesburg, as a possible platform for the meeting. This format would essentially allow the leaders of the two countries to meet within the framework of a major international event to discuss accumulated problems.
Along with this proposal, the Finnish leader also touched on the topic of nuclear weapons, emphasizing that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) fully ensures Finland's nuclear defense.
Notably, Finland's proposal is not unique. Shortly before, on October 27, Hungary had expressed similar readiness. The country's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Péter Szijjártó, had stated that Budapest is ready to host talks between the leaders of Russia and the US at any convenient time to discuss a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
Szijjártó added that Hungary continues preparations for a Russia-US summit but stressed an important condition: the prospect of achieving peace as a result of the negotiations must become truly tangible.
Washington and Moscow have not yet responded.
