EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos visited Yerevan to discuss opportunities for regional peace, economic cooperation, and strengthening ties. Kos met with RA Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, after which, during joint statements, she emphasized the historic period for the region and the opportunity for peace.
"While you celebrate independence, I want to emphasize that your commitment to resilience and peace is very important," said Marta Kos, congratulating the Armenian people on Independence Day. She assured that the EU will continue to be by Armenia's side on the path of the new history of the region. "Continue to trust us," added the Commissioner, stressing that Europe sees Armenia as an important actor in ensuring stability and development.
This statement is not only a diplomatic step but also a signal that the EU is ready to make investments to help Armenia overcome challenges and build a peaceful future, she noted. During the meeting, Marta Kos detailed the main purpose of the visit, emphasizing that the region is living through a historic period.
"For the first time, it has become possible to bring peace to the South Caucasus, and that is the purpose and reason for my visit," she stated during the joint statements. The discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan focused on the paths to peace that can change the face of the region. Kos noted that the EU is ready to support Armenia's efforts to establish peace, which creates an opportunity for new relations throughout the region. Economic cooperation was at the core of the discussions.
"We are ready to make investments in trade, energy, transport, key infrastructure projects, in line with your 'Crossroads of Peace' initiative," said Marta Kos. This initiative, proposed by the Armenian government as a central hub to connect Europe with Asia, is receiving the EU's support. Kos emphasized that such investments will help develop the economy, create jobs, and strengthen stability. Cooperation in the energy and transport sectors can become a bridge to overcome regional conflicts, while at the same time increasing Armenia's competitiveness in international markets.
The Commissioner also spoke about the agenda of international and interregional connections.
"We are working intensively on developing an agenda for international, interregional connectivity, connecting Europe with Central Asia and the South Caucasus through Turkey, where Armenia is an indispensable actor," noted Kos. This strategy shows that Armenia is perceived as an important bridge between Europe and Asia. The "Crossroads of Peace" initiative can become the symbol of these connections, where Armenia will become a hub for regional trade, energy, and transport, noted the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
