EU Drafting Own Ukraine Peace Plan, Rejects US Proposal

The European Union has begun developing its own plan to end the war in Ukraine in response to proposals from the US, which Brussels has described as a "bad deal" for Kyiv and a satisfaction of Putin's demands. The Wall Street Journal reports this, citing European officials.
According to the European side, the plan developed by Washington, which includes territorial and military concessions from Ukraine, is unacceptable. EU officials and diplomats have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the sharp change in Washington's approach. In a conversation with Politico, one EU diplomat noted: "Of course, this is worrying, but we must stick to our position."
According to him, "If Russia avoids responsibility, it is only a matter of time before we see new aggression not only against Ukraine but also against EU and NATO member states." Another high-ranking official simply called the American plan a list of "points to satisfy Putin."
In response to these developments, European leaders are trying to unite. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to a German official, is working "intensively" to coordinate a unified European response that will allow Ukraine to be offered fairer and more acceptable terms for a peace agreement. Europe hopes to prepare its own version of the peace arrangements within a few days.
European officials also insist that the US did not consult with them when developing its plan, and Ukraine was also largely ignored. This contradicts the claims of the American side. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, had approved "most of the plan." However, according to the WSJ, Umerov was informed about it only in recent days, which casts doubt on the fact of full coordination.
