Earth's Ozone Layer is Recovering, WMO Reports

16 SEP 2025 07:35
The Earth's protective ozone layer is recovering. This is reported by the Deutsche Welle Telegram channel.
According to the latest data, the ozone hole in 2024 was smaller compared to 2020–2023. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), both natural atmospheric phenomena and the gradual phasing out of ozone-depleting substances have contributed to the recovery. These were previously used in the production of refrigerators, air conditioners, fire-extinguishing foam, and hair spray.
According to WMO calculations:
  • The ozone layer could recover to 1980s levels by the middle of this century.
  • Above the Arctic: by 2045,
  • Above Antarctica: by 2066.
  • The depletion of the ozone layer leads to an increase in cases of skin cancer and cataracts, and also harms flora and fauna.
