Democrats Score Landslide Victory in US Elections
5 NOV 2025 11:40
The November 4 elections in the United States brought a landslide victory for the Democratic Party on almost all fronts—in the elections for governors, attorneys general, mayors, members of legislative assemblies, and state Supreme Courts. These results are seen by many as a vote of no confidence in the administration of President Donald Trump.
Key victories were recorded in major states. In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill was elected governor. Her victory is particularly noteworthy as it was achieved in a tense struggle against Trump's appointee, Jack Ciattarelli, despite Trump having performed better than expected in that state in the previous presidential election.
In Virginia, the Democratic candidate, Abigail Spanberger, also won, becoming the first female governor in the state's history. In both states, Donald Trump's approval rating is currently extremely low. In Virginia, 55% of citizens are dissatisfied with his work, and in New Jersey, 54%. It is noteworthy that in Virginia, 91% of those dissatisfied with the president's performance voted for the Democrat Spanberger. In the same state, Democrat Jay Jones was elected attorney general, receiving the votes of 85% of voters dissatisfied with Trump.
The Democrats' successes continued in the judicial system as well. In Pennsylvania, three Democratic judges retained their seats on the state Supreme Court, bringing the balance of power to 5:2 in favor of the Democrats. This could become a decisive factor in the next presidential campaign, as Pennsylvania is considered one of the largest "swing" states.
Democrats also strengthened their positions in municipal elections. In Atlanta, Democratic Mayor Andre Dickens retained his post, and in Jersey City, former governor, Democrat Jim McGreevey, won.
This was, in fact, an assessment of Trump's foreign, and even more so, domestic policy. How the head of the White House will react to this is not yet clear.
