Democrats Celebrate Major Wins in Rebuke to Trump

In the first major elections held a year after Donald Trump's return to the White House, the Democrats are celebrating convincing victories. This is a long-awaited success for a party that has been trying to regain its footing for the past year after losing the presidential election and control of Congress.
A new generation of Democrats, including the 34-year-old newly elected mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, have won in the key states of New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. At the same time, California voters approved a new map of congressional districts aimed at increasing the chances of a Democratic victory in next year's House of Representatives elections.
"We won across the country, in 'red,' 'purple,' and 'blue' districts. In reality, this was a huge rejection of Trump's extremism," Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin told reporters.
These impressive results, which also include important victories in Pennsylvania and Georgia, have given new energy to the Democrats. However, despite this success, the party still faces many challenges ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Polls show that voters are still evenly divided between the two parties.
It is noteworthy that all the main Democratic candidates, whether the democratic-socialist Zohran Mamdani or the moderates Abigail Spanberger (Virginia) and Mikie Sherrill (New Jersey), focused their campaigns on economic issues, especially the problem of the rising cost of living.
"I think the lesson for the president is that it's not enough to diagnose the crisis in the lives of working Americans. You have to deliver results," Mamdani, who became the first Muslim mayor in the history of the largest city in the US, said at his first press conference.
For his part, President Trump, speaking in Miami, hardly touched on his party's defeats. Instead, he focused on the anniversary of his own election victory a year ago, calling it "the most significant election victory in American history." However, he could not refrain from a stinging remark about Mamdani, saying, "Last night we lost a little sovereignty in New York."
For Republicans, these elections became an early warning that the party may have difficulties mobilizing Trump's coalition when he is not personally on the ballot.
