Cyberattack Causes Chaos at Major European Airports
22 SEP 2025 14:20
Europe's largest airports have become the target of a large-scale cyberattack, leading to mass chaos, the delay of hundreds of flights, and cancellations. The attack, for which the pro-Russian hacker group NoName057(16) has claimed responsibility, has disrupted the operation of the airports' digital systems, creating serious obstacles for passengers.
London Heathrow, Brussels, and Berlin airports were most affected by the cyberattack.
The attack was mainly directed at the company Collins Aerospace, which provides services related to flight check-in and boarding systems. As a result, the check-in systems were paralyzed, forcing airlines to switch to manual check-in, which in turn caused huge queues and significant delays. Heathrow representatives reported that they faced technical problems that affected their airline partners. Brussels Airport also confirmed the disruptions, noting that they affected several European airports.
Individual airlines, including Lufthansa, also warned passengers of possible disruptions. The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) has confirmed that the disruptions at the airports are the result of a third-party cyberattack. The NoName057(16) group announced on its Telegram channel that they are behind the so-called DDoS attacks. This group is known for its actions against the West, which, according to them, are a response to the support provided to Ukraine.
Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to clarify all the circumstances of the cyberattack. ENISA is working with partners to assess the situation and mitigate the consequences.
