Canonization Ceremony Begins for Ignatius Maloyan and 6 Other Blesseds

19 OCT 2025 09:19
Thousands of faithful have gathered in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican to follow the historic event: the canonization ceremony of Archbishop Ignatius Maloyan and 6 other Blesseds.
The decision to canonize the Armenian Catholic Archbishop Ignatius Maloyan, who was martyred during the Armenian Genocide, was confirmed by Pope Francis weeks before his death, and the date of the ceremony was decided during the Consistory of Cardinals convened under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, which took place on June 13 of the current year. Accordingly, on the occasion of World Mission Day, on October 19, along with the martyred Armenian archbishop of the Armenian Genocide, 6 other blesseds are being canonized.
The Catholicoi of All Armenians and of the Great House of Cilicia have not traveled to the Vatican to attend the canonization ceremony of the Armenian Archbishop Ignatius Maloyan. The Holy See reports that Etchmiadzin is represented at the event by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, and Bishop Mesrob Sarkissian has traveled to the Vatican from Antelias. It should be recalled that Prime Minister Pashinyan, who is in the Vatican on a working visit, is present at the ceremony. A private conversation between Nikol Pashinyan and His Holiness Pope Leo XIV is scheduled.
