Bulgaria to Allow Putin's Flight for Trump Summit

Bulgarian authorities have expressed their readiness to allow the plane carrying Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin to fly through their airspace to participate in a summit with US President Donald Trump in Budapest. This important diplomatic step was announced by Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, as reported by Euractiv.
The announcement was made on October 20 in Luxembourg during a meeting of EU foreign ministers. Speaking to journalists, Georgiev justified Sofia's position, presenting it as a move to support peace efforts.
"When efforts are being made to achieve peace, and the prerequisite for that is holding such a meeting, then the most logical thing is to facilitate this meeting by all possible means," emphasized the Bulgarian minister. He added, "How is it proposed to hold a meeting if one of the participants cannot attend it?"
Meanwhile, another Bulgarian official told Euractiv that although Sofia has shown political will, no such request has yet been received from Moscow. The publication also recalls that Bulgaria does not share a common border with Hungary, but a flight through Bulgarian airspace would significantly shorten the duration of the Russian president's flight to Budapest.
At the heart of these developments is the phone call between US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on October 16. After the conversation, Trump announced that the countries would organize high-level talks, which would be followed by a meeting of the two presidents in the Hungarian capital.
In turn, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that he has already instructed the creation of a special commission to begin the organizational work for the summit. Thus, Bulgaria's positive stance becomes one of the practical steps in preparing for the upcoming high-level meeting.
