In Serbia's capital, Belgrade, in front of the parliament building, an armed incident occurred, which the country's president, Aleksandar Vučić, described as a "terrorist act." A 70-year-old man opened fire, injuring a passerby, and then set fire to one of the tents by throwing a handful of bullets into the fire.
As a result of the incident, a 57-year-old man received a gunshot wound to his thigh. He was immediately hospitalized, and according to doctors, his life is not in danger. The police managed to arrest the person who opened fire.
Information about the incident is contradictory. According to some sources, the burned tent belonged to the supporters of President Aleksandar Vučić. However, according to other data, the incident took place in a tent camp organized by the opposition, which was holding a protest. Footage published on social media shows the injured man coming out of the tent, hopping on one leg, while police officers point their weapons at the tent. According to Telegraf, the shooter shot at a gas cylinder, which caused the fire to break out.
It is noteworthy that at the time of the incident, President Vučić was in the parliament building, where he was participating in a ceremony for signing contracts for the distribution of suburban houses. Due to the incident, he was forced to leave the event.
"I must be the first to speak and apologize for having to leave this wonderful gathering due to the terrorist act that took place in front of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia," he stated, promising to make a detailed statement later.
The prosecutor of the Belgrade Higher Prosecutor's Office arrived at the scene. The area in front of the parliament has been cordoned off with police tape, and an investigation is underway.
